How Do They Keep It Secret?

In wartime, the process of secret-keeping is of great priority, as evidenced by the compartmentalization of the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb. Even during the war, some tactical military movements were stamped “DOUBLE TOP SECRET”, one of which was related to a leaked document on UFOs signed by FDR. Dr. Wood will describe several kinds of techniques that are used to keep secrets, such as compartmentalization, threats, monitoring, and various psychological warfare techniques, including control of the media. Our speaker at one time worked in a “SCIF” or Special Compartmented Information Facility and at another time was responsible for determining the proper classification levels of some of his company’s Independent Research and Development Projects at McDonnell Douglas Corporation, now Boeing. An acknowledged researcher on authenticating “leaked” classified documents, Dr. Wood will share with us what he has learned about the secrecy processes that might be able to keep secret a huge project such as a “secret space program.”
